St. Cloud, Minn. — The North American Hockey League has announced its monthly player awards for the month of January and St. Cloud’s Evan Murr is taking home Defenseman of the Month honors. Norsemen Blake Mesenburg was named runner-up for NAHL Forward of the Month and Tomas Bolo was an honorable mention for NAHL Goalie of the Month.
Murr, 18, raised his game to a whole new level in January. The 5’11, 175 lbs. native of Stillwater, MN, put up over half the points he has recorded this season during his torrid month of January. Murr put up 14 points in just 10 games played, which included five goals, nine assists, and a +7 rating for the Norsemen, who now find themselves in 2nd place in points in the Central Division with the division’s highest win percentage. Murr recorded at least a point in eight of the 10 games during the month and had four multi-point games.
“Evan has been playing really well and given us some offensive punch from the back end, which also really helps our powerplay,” said Norsemen head coach Corey Millen.
“We are playing our best hockey as a team right now, and I think we can find this kind of team success throughout the rest of the year,” said Murr. “I’m just hoping to continue to improve each and every day, and just taking full advantage of the opportunity this group of guys is providing for each other.”Mesenburg, 19, led the NAHL in goals scored in January with 9 and was second in scoring with 15 points. The 5’11 180 lbs. native of Orono, MN is second on the team in scoring and is tied for the league lead in shorthanded goals on the season with four, including a pair in the month of January.
Bolo, 19, has won six-straight in goal for the Norsemen and posted a shutout as part of a three-win 90-save week last week for St. Cloud. The 6’2 188 lbs. Bolo posted a 6-2-0 overall record in January with a .915 save percentage and 2.19 GAA. The Slovakian netminder represented his home country at World Juniors and will represent the Norsemen as part of the NAHL Selects Team at the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament in Pittsburgh this coming week.
